The Promise I Will Keep

I was called to serve our country in the Marine Corps. Now, I’m being called to serve California as your Governor. And I’m asking you to stand with me.

I’m on a mission to serve those who served - I’ve buried friends, fought a war, and battled the VA. I’m not here to ‘thank you’ — I’m here to fight for you. "The VA was built to serve veterans — but for too many, it’s become a second battlefield. It’s a maze built by bureaucrats and walked by the wounded, where the system meant to provide care now buries our heroes in paperwork, delays, and red tape. They trained us to fight, then made us beg for care. Veterans shouldn’t have to fight two wars — one overseas and one with the VA. What was supposed to be a support system has become a silence factory, where broken processes break spirits. The problem isn’t the people working inside the VA — it’s the bloated, outdated system that forces veterans to serve dysfunction instead of receiving the dignity they earned. Fixing the VA isn’t about politics. It’s about life and death for those who gave this country everything. I was called to serve our country in the Marine Corps. Now, I’m being called to serve California as your Governor. And I’m asking you to stand with me.

David Serpa is a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran, community builder, and former congressional candidate now running for Governor of California.

He didn’t grow up dreaming of military service — but after watching friends deploy multiple times while he stayed home, he chose to enlist at 23. He served as a machine gunner with 1st Battalion, 1st Marines in Afghanistan’s Helmand River Valley, where he earned the Navy Achievement Medal for valor in combat. His time overseas — marked by the birth of his son, the death of his friend Doc Beauchamp, and the later suicide of his squad leader Jeff Reber — reshaped his life. After leaving the Marine Corps, David found success in real estate but not fulfillment. He built a large company but experienced a breakdown that led to a deeper breakthrough. He turned to mental health treatment through the VA and later studied post-traumatic growth at the Boulder Crest Foundation. This inspired him to found Our Community, a mission-driven real estate hub that hosted programs for veterans, women, seniors, ministries, and the arts — putting his belief in service into action. He also authored Common Sense for California, a two-part call for a new revolution rooted in rebuilding rather than tearing down. David’s journey — from homelessness and war to healing and leadership — drives his mission to create a California that serves its people with courage, compassion, and common sense.

I served beside the best this country has to offer. I won’t stop fighting for them now.
